One Way to Guarantee a Healthier Diet?

A recent study showed that those who make it a habit to cook meals at home, as opposed to dining out or getting takeout food, have healthier diets. Researchers at Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) found that people who make their own meals make healthier choices overall, regardless of whether they are intentionally following a low fat, low carb or other special diet plan.

Scientists reviewed data from more than 9,000 subjects over the age of 20, from 2007-2010. The total calories, fat grams, sugars, and carbohydrates consumed per day were tracked, as well as how often they ate fast foods or frozen meals.

Results showed that those who cooked most of their own meals at home consumed an average of about 2,100 calories, 81 grams of fat, and 119 grams of sugar per day. On the other hand, those who cooked their own meals no more than once weekly consumed an average of about 2,300 calories per day, 84 grams of fat, and 135 grams of sugar.

Even when you are cooking at home, there are healthier alternatives to favourite meals, and choosing the right ingredients, as well as focusing on getting plenty of fruits and veggies, is important.

It shouldn’t be a huge effort for you to eat a healthy diet, if you establish the right habits and buy the right groceries. It also won’t kill you to dine out once in a while, but if you do make it a habit to dine out regularly, then also make it a habit to make healthier choices when it comes to restaurant meals.

Cutting fat and calories from your meals will make them healthier, help you to lose weight, and help to reduce the risk of developing many chronic and serious health conditions. Take your own health seriously and make sure that you are taking the right steps to ensure that your diet is getting you to the right place!
